<description>&#60;p&#62;SecretSync requires that you have Java version 1.6.0 or newer on your system in order to run. If you can't update or install Java for the entire system, i.e. if you don't have admin privileges, you can still run SecretSync by installing a copy of the Java runtime into the SecretSync folder.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If you try and run SecretSync and get the following message --&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;'This application requires a Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0'&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;You don't have the appropriate Java version. It may be older, or not installed, etc. To install a local version that SecretSync should run ok with, do the following steps.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Download jPortable from:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable&#34;&#62;http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Run and extract it to &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;%APPDATA%\SecretSync\Java&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;%APPDATA% corresponds to the following directory on XP:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;C:\Documents and Settings\&#38;lt;USERNAME&#38;gt;\Application Data\SecretSync\Java&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Or the following directory on Windows 7/Vista:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;C:\Users\&#38;lt;USERNAME&#38;gt;\AppData\Roaming\SecretSync\Java&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If SecretSync can find the Java runtime at the above location, it will be able to run.

<title>admin on "Use SecretSync with MyDrive.ch over WebDAV"</title>

<description>&#60;p&#62;We've just discovered a cool little web-based storage company called &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.mydrive.ch/&#34;&#62;MyDrive.ch&#60;/a&#62;, based out of Sweden, that not only provide a web interface to manage your files, but also lets you map a drive using WebDAV to access your files. MyDrive.ch offers 2 GB of data storage free, and are the property of &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.softronics.ch/en/about-us/about-us.php&#34;&#62;this company&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Since MyDrive.ch provides WebDAV support, you can use SecretSync with it. It's pretty easy to setup. First, you'll need to sign-up for an account with MyDrive.ch.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Then, you'll need to follow their instructions to map a local drive to your MyDrive.ch account. The instructions can be found &#60;a href=&#34;http://www.mydrive.ch/help#webdav&#34;&#62;&#60;strong&#62;here&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;/a&#62;. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The following demonstrates setting up on the Windows System, using NetDrive, per the recommendation of MyDrive.ch.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;After installing NetDrive, you can map a drive letter on Windows to your MyDrive.ch account. Here's a screenshot.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/forum-mydrive-netdrive.png&#34; alt=&#34;NetDrive map to MyDrive.ch WebDAV&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Next, you need to download and install SecretSync. When it asks for the Dropbox, etc, folder, give it the drive letter you mapped using NetDrive. In our case, this was &#60;code&#62;Z:\&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/forum-mydrive-secretsync-install.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync tunnel folder MyDrive.ch&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Finish the install, and then you can use SecretSync as you normally would. Put a file in, it encrypts it and uploads it to the &#60;code&#62;Z:\&#60;/code&#62; drive, which goes to your MyDrive.ch account.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;E.g. here's the contents of the SecretSync folder:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/forum-mydrive-secretsync.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync with MyDrive.ch&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;And here's the corresponding data in our MyDrive.ch account.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/forum-mydrive-mydrive.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync with MyDrive.ch&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Since WebDAV works in a cross-platform way, you should be able to setup this configuration on multiple platforms and synchronize your files in total privacy and security.

<title>admin on "Use SecretSync with Amazon S3 on Windows"</title>

<description>&#60;p&#62;SecretSync was designed to be simple and work between two locations, usually folders, on your hard drive. In this way, it is able to be used with your choice of synchronization service, whether Dropbox, Ubuntu One, or SugarSync.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Now, there's another alternative. You can be your own cloud provider, by using &#60;a href=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com&#34;&#62;SecretSync&#60;/a&#62; with &#60;a href=&#34;http://tntdrive.com&#34;&#62;TntDrive&#60;/a&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;TntDrive is cool utility that maps a Windows drive letter to a bucket in Amazon S3. (Just FYI, S3 is the service Dropbox uses to actually store your data online.) Then, anything you put in the mapped drive is uploaded to S3. You can then map the drive from a second PC, and you have your own cloud-based file sharing.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To add strong client-side encryption and synchronization, add SecretSync to the mix. Then you can point your &#60;strong&#62;destination (or tunnel folder)&#60;/strong&#62; folder to the mapped drive, and you have DIY encrypted synchronization.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Here's how to get started:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;TntDrive will prompt you for your Amazon S3 account, so you'll need to &#60;a href=&#34;https://aws.amazon.com/&#34;&#62;sign-up for one first&#60;/a&#62;. After you've signed-up, you'll need to create a bucket. I called mine &#60;em&#62;secretsync&#60;/em&#62;:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/secretsync-tntdrive-fig0.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync TntDrive&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;After that, you're ready to go. Map the drive using TntDrive. It will ask for your Amazon security credentials. Then, it will ask for your S3 account (different than the security credentials) and the bucket you've set up:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/secretsync-tntdrive-fig1.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync TntDrive&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;After you have the drive mapped, and have verified that you can save files to it successfully, &#60;strong&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/download/#windows&#34;&#62;install SecretSync&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/strong&#62;. When it prompts for the &#60;strong&#62;destination or tunnel folder&#60;/strong&#62;, choose the mapped drive. In our case, this was drive &#60;code&#62;Z:\&#60;/code&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Then, use SecretSync as you normally would. Put a file in the &#60;code&#62;SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; folder, and you'll see its encrypted version in the TntDrive:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/secretsync-tntdrive-fig2.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync TntDrive&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;There you have it. Roll-your-own secure sync.

<title>admin on "Use SecretSync with Microsoft LiveMesh"</title>

<description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/livemesh64.png&#34; alt=&#34;SecretSync with Microsoft LiveMesh (logo)&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;SecretSync was designed to be versatile, and work with any folder on your system. A case in point: you can use it with &#60;strong&#62;Microsoft LiveMesh&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Microsoft&#60;/strong&#62; has their own Dropbox-like offering called &#60;strong&#62;LiveMesh&#60;/strong&#62;. It works in largely the same manner as Dropbox, by letting you choose a folder on your system, and then synchronizing that folder to the LiveMesh cloud. It has a nice 5 GB free option, too.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Once you install LiveMesh and select a folder to sync (we chose &#60;code&#62;Documents\LiveMesh&#60;/code&#62;), you can easily point SecretSync to this location as your tunnel folder. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;We created the &#60;code&#62;Documents\LiveMesh\_SecretSync_tunnel_Root&#60;/code&#62; sub-folder as our tunnel folder when we installed SecretSync.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Everything in this folder will be encrypted. LiveMesh will then sync the encrypted files to your other systems.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Here's our text file in the &#60;code&#62;SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; folder:&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;And here it is after SecretSync has encrypted and added it to LiveMesh:&#60;/p&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;If during uninstall of SecretSync you mistakenly select the &#60;strong&#62;Delete SecretSync tunnel folder&#60;/strong&#62; option (despite the warning), i.e.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/secretsync-del-tunnel.png&#34; alt=&#34;&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;your SecretSync data will be removed from Dropbox, and will as a &#60;strong&#62;result be deleted on any other computer that is synchronizing with this computer&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If all computers in the sync chain synchronize this deletion, the only possibility for recovery is to use the Dropbox recovery option. We cannot guarantee that this will work, but some users have recovered their data in this manner.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Log in with your account to &#60;a href=&#34;http://dropbpox.com&#34;&#62;dropbox.com&#60;/a&#62; and click &#60;em&#62;Show deleted files&#60;/em&#62;. If &#60;code&#62;.SecretSync_tunnel_Root&#60;/code&#62; appears, check to restore it.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/dropbox-deleted-files.png&#34; alt=&#34;&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If you re-install SecretSync and it detects this folder, it will copy-decrypt the files into the local SecretSync folder.

<description>&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Note:&#60;/strong&#62; If you're doing this in order to perform a clean reinstall, it is recommended that you backup all the data in the &#60;code&#62;SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; folder first. &#60;strong&#62;Do this as a precaution, in case there are any issues, so none of your data is lost&#60;/strong&#62;. Simply copy all the files in the &#60;code&#62;SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; folder to an alternate location, like your Documents folder.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To uninstall, download this archive,&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/help/SecretSync-uninstall.zip&#34; rel=&#34;nofollow&#34;&#62;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/help/SecretSync-uninstall.zip&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;extract the contents and double-click on the 'SecretSync-uninstall' app. Once the service has been removed, you should get a pop-up telling you so.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;Note:&#60;/strong&#62; This does not remove the &#60;code&#62;Dropbox/.SecretSync_tunnel_Root&#60;/code&#62; folder, since you may be synchronizing other machines. If you are removing SecretSync everywhere, you will need to manually delete the &#60;code&#62;.SecretSync_tunnel_Root&#60;/code&#62; folder from Dropbox. &#60;strong&#62;Just be aware that by manually deleting the .SecretSync_tunnel_Root will cause your data to be gone from all computers in the sync chain&#60;/strong&#62;

<description>&#60;p&#62;To uninstall SecretSync completely from OS X (especially in the case of a problem, where you plan to re-install), please follow these instructions closely:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(1) Backup all the data in the SecretSync folder first. &#60;strong&#62;Do this as a precaution, in case there are any issues, so none of your data is lost.&#60;/strong&#62; Simply copy all the files in the &#60;code&#62;SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; folder to an alternate location, like your &#60;code&#62;Documents&#60;/code&#62; folder.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(2) Stop SecretSync. You must make sure the SecretSync process is not running on your computer. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(a) Open Applications in Finder, and click &#60;code&#62;SecretSync Service Stop&#60;/code&#62;, i.e.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;img src=&#34;http://getsecretsync.com/ss/images/support-osx-ss-stop.png&#34; alt=&#34;stop secretsync&#34; /&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(b) Just to be sure no errant processes are still running, open &#60;code&#62;Terminal&#60;/code&#62; (most of the following steps will be done in Terminal anyway), and type:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;ps ux&#124;grep [S]ecretSync&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If SecretSync is still running somewhere, you will see something like the following:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;user  6750   0.0  1.6   863364  33612   ??  S     2:52PM   0:01.69 java -jar SecretSync.jar&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;You can kill the process by using the &#60;code&#62;kill&#60;/code&#62; command with the second number above, &#60;code&#62;6750&#60;/code&#62;, which is the process ID. Yours will likely be a different number.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;kill -9 6750&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(3) The SecretSync application is installed into a hidden folder under your home folder named &#60;code&#62;.secretsync&#60;/code&#62;. To remove this folder completely from your system, type the following command in &#60;code&#62;Terminal&#60;/code&#62; - &#60;strong&#62;CAUTION, this command cannot be undone.&#60;/strong&#62; Do this only if you are sure all the previous steps have been successfully completed.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;rm -fr $HOME/.secretsync&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(4) Now, remove the SecretSync folder, where you have stored your data. &#60;strong&#62;Step 1 above must be done first, or you could lose all your data&#60;/strong&#62;. Paste the following into Terminal:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;rm -r $HOME/SecretSync&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Note: This assumes that you installed your SecretSync folder into its default location under the home folder. If you installed it elsewhere, you will need to use &#60;code&#62;rm -r /Alternate/Path/To/SecretSync&#60;/code&#62; but be aware the results are the same, i.e. you can't undelete these files.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(5) Check that the folders and files have been removed. Still in the Terminal, type&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;ls -alF $HOME/.secretsync; ls -alF $HOME/SecretSync&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;You should get get a &#60;code&#62;No such file or directory&#60;/code&#62; message for both.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;(6) OPTIONAL. Only do this step if you want SecretSync removed completely from Dropbox as well. If you only want to uninstall SecretSync from the current computer and let other computers continue synchronizing, &#60;strong&#62;do not do this step&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To remove all traces of SecretSync, perform the final deletion:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;code&#62;rm -fr $HOME/Dropbox/.SecretSync_tunnel_Root&#60;/code&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;This will remove the tunnel folder from Dropbox, which will then synchronize those changes to your other computers.

<description>&#60;p&#62;SecretSync has no logic to handle proxy servers in its code. As a Java application it relies entirely on the Java runtime proxy settings. Information about configuring the proxy for the Java runtime are here:&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;http://www.java.com/en/download/help/proxy_setup.xml&#34;&#62;http://www.java.com/en/download/help/proxy_setup.xml&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;On startup, SecretSync makes a couple https calls to the below URL.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;a href=&#34;https://www.completelyprivatefiles.com/services/secretsync/db/&#34;&#62;https://www.completelyprivatefiles.com/services/secretsync/db/&#60;/a&#62;&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;It does this to exchange your token for an encryption key. It makes no other connections after this point. If it can't connect to the server, the application cannot continue, and will exit.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If your browser uses a proxy, and you put the above URL in your browser and you can connect, you might consider setting the Java runtime to &#60;strong&#62;Use browser settings&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Some proxies are 'filtering proxies' which means that they may block (1) certain sites, and (2) certain applications, such as Java from Internet access. This means that simply because your browser can access our site, Java may still not be able to. Because of the many possible configurations and proxy solutions, we can only provide limited support for proxy issues.
